A young Venetian, Bassanio, who has long outlived his means, must seek financial help from a wealthy yet morose merchant, Antonio, if he is to have any chance in wooing the beautiful heiress, Portia. Antonio, in helping his friend, enters into a dangerous bond with a Jewish money-lender, Shylock - a bond which Shylock is determined to see honoured.
